To use this BMI calculator, your computer must allow the use of javascripts, as that is how this calculator works!
To calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI), choose the radio button in/lb. Then simply enter your height in inches and your weight in pounds. For example, if your height is five feet six inches,and your weight is 160 pounds, you would choose the radio button on the right in the box below, then type in 66 for your height and type in 160 for your weight. Click on the Calculate button, and you will get a BMI result of 25.88. This would indicate that you are overweight.
Any BMI of 25 or more is considered overweight. This is a rough rule of thumb, which is usually a pretty good indicator of whether a person is overweight or not. It is not without exceptions, however, but they are rare. For example, a competitive bodybuilder may have such a muscular development that he has very little fat on his body. Because muscle is denser than fat, he may show up as having a BMI greater than 25, but he would not really be overweight.
Incidentally, because he has so much muscle, he would probably also have a high metabolic rate. Increasing muscle mass raises the metabolic rate, while increasing fat mass decreases the metabolic rate. Hence, all other things being equal, if two people have the same BMI, the one who is more muscular will have a higher metabolic rate. Therefore, he could conceiveably eat more calories per day that the one with more fat, and the muscular one would not gain weight, but the fat one might. It doesn't seem fair, does it? But that's the way it works.
The guidelines (from the FDA) for interpreting the Body Mass Index figures are as follows:
BMI is greater than 30, the person is considered obese
BMI lies between 25 and 30, the person is overweight
BMI lies between 18.5 and 25, the person is in a normal weight range
BMI is less than 18.5, the person is underweight
In case your computer won't allow javascripts, you can calculate your BMI from the following formula:
705 times (your weight in pounds)
BMI = ---------------------------------------------
(your height in inches)^2
So, square your height in inches and divide that into 705 times your weight in pounds; the result is your BMI
