Excess Weight and Peri-Menopausal Women

Why do I select pre-menopausal women for this page? It is because when women get close to the perimenopausal/menopause period of their lives, they almost invariably begin to gain weight. There may be a few lucky ones that escape this "law of nature", but they are quite rare. When you see a perimenopausal/menopausal woman who look very trim, the chances are that she works very hard at it. Suzanne Sommers discusses this topic in one of her books. She said that the old approaches to losing weight simply didn't work very well anymore when she reached this period in her life.

I believe that if a woman approaches this period with a weight that is already too high, she is going to have a very difficult time. She will have to battle the perimenopausal/menopausal "law of nature" with a tremendous handicap - excess baggage to start with! The cause of this propensity to gain weight during this period seems to be tied into the profound hormonal changes going on at this time.

There are two other hormones involved in weight management. These are not specific to menopause, however. These are leptin and ghrelin.

Leptin helps tell our brain when we have eaten enough, that is, it regulates our true physical appetite. What it cannot regulate, however, is our bad habits, such as emotional eating. Reducing the food intake (i.e. calories) and increasing physical activity can restore the normal functional sensitivity of the body to leptin. Skipping meals and going on very low calorie diets in order to lose weight quickly can lower your leptin levels. At the other extreme, people who habitually overeat wind up with a high level of leptin, but their habits have overwhealmed the leptin function, and they can be said to be leptin resistant.

Ghrelin is a hormone that stimulates the appetite. In essence, it is sort of the opposite of leptin. If one doesn't get enough sleep, there is a double whammy involved. Your body increases your production of ghrelin and decreases production of leptin. Both these changes can cause weight gain. So get enough sleep, if at all possible.

The best way to handle this "law of nature" situation is to enroll in this natural weight loss healthy diet program.
