Obviously, this is a very individual matter, and we will not
say anything dogmatic here. But that does not mean that we cannot make some
valuable rough estimates.
Let us assume that for each person the activity/exercise level is a relatively constant factor. Then, as a starting point, let us acknowledge the fact that most people will lose weight if they consume about 10 cal per day for every pound they now weigh.
So, the answer to "How many calories a day are needed to lose weight?' would be 2000 calories a day for a 200 pound person. That is the amount needed in order to start losing weight. After the person loses, say 10 pounds, they should reduce their average daily caloric intake to about 1900 calories. Once they have lost another ten pounds, and they are now at 180 pounds, they should again reduce their average daily intake to about 1800 calories.
Pursuing this process until they reach a weight about two to three pounds below their target weight, they should then start increasing their average daily caloric intake a little, so they can find their energy balance point, and thus maintain their target weight. This will take a little fine-tuning of course, but this how one maintains the target weight. Losing the excess weight is one thing; keeping it off is another.
By making this fine-tuning a way of life, maintaining one's target weight is quite do-able. When you no longer have to think much about your intake, and you are maintaining your target weight, you will see that food and weight are no longer problem areas, but aspects of life to be enjoyed.
